Spending time in nature has always been at the heart of my painting practice, and marshes in particular hold a quiet pull for me.
There is something endlessly captivating about these landscapes—the way water, grasses, and sky merge, and how light transforms the scene from moment to moment. Sunset over the Marsh was born from one of those evenings when simply being present in the landscape became the inspiration.
As the sun lowered, the marsh seemed to change with every passing minute. Colors deepened, reflections softened, and the sky began to glow in subtle layers of warmth. I wasn’t interested in capturing a single, exact moment so much as the feeling of that transition—the calm, the stillness, and the gentle drama that unfolds as day gives way to night.
While painting this piece, I focused on the relationship between light and atmosphere. Marshes are often overlooked, but they offer a richness that reveals itself when you slow down and really observe. The grasses catch the light differently than open water, and the sky’s reflection weaves its way through the scene in unexpected ways. I allowed the brushwork to remain expressive, letting color and movement suggest the experience rather than define every detail.
Sunset over the Marsh reflects my ongoing exploration of nature as both subject and teacher. These quiet environments invite contemplation, reminding me to pay attention—to subtle shifts in color, to changing light, and to the beauty found in stillness. Painting outdoors and drawing from these moments continues to shape how I see and translate the landscape onto canvas.
This newest artwork, Sunset over the Marsh, is now available for purchase. It’s a piece that carries the warmth and calm of an evening spent immersed in nature, and I hope it brings that same sense of peace and connection into the space where it finds its home.
