Springtime Along the Coast

Spring along the coast of Maine always feels like a quiet revelation to me.

After the long months of winter, there’s a subtle but unmistakable shift—the light softens, the air feels lighter, and the landscape begins to wake up. Springtime Along the Coast of Maine grew out of my desire to capture that moment of transition, when the land is just beginning to breathe again.

As I worked on this painting, I was drawn to the balance between what is enduring and what is changing. The rocky shoreline and open water hold their familiar strength, while new life slowly emerges around them. I wanted the painting to reflect both the steadiness of the coast and the gentle energy that spring brings with it.

Color and light played an important role in this piece. I was thinking about the way early spring light feels—clear, hopeful, and full of possibility. Rather than focusing on precise details, I allowed the brushwork to stay loose and expressive, letting movement and atmosphere guide the composition. My goal was to create a sense of place that feels lived in and remembered, not just observed.

The Maine coastline continues to inspire me because it offers endless variation while remaining deeply grounded. There is a quiet strength here that I return to again and again. In Springtime Along the Coast of Maine, I hoped to capture that sense of renewal—how familiar landscapes can feel entirely new when the season changes.

This painting is a celebration of spring’s arrival and the calm optimism that comes with it. It reflects my ongoing exploration of landscape as an emotional experience, shaped by memory, light, and the natural rhythm of the coast. I hope it invites viewers to slow down, linger, and connect with their own memories of time spent by the sea.
